How to Care for Your Art

Your Nook print is made to last. With a little care, it will hold its colour, texture and character for years to come. Here's everything you need to know.

01
First things first

On Receiving Your Print

Rolled Prints

Unrolling with Care

Carefully remove your print from the tube. Without touching the printed area — use the corners and the back of the print — place it flat on a clean surface. Let it naturally smooth out and allow any small shipping creases to settle on their own.

Framed Prints

Unwrapping Safely

We pack every framed print with care for the journey ahead. Wash your hands thoroughly or wear clean gloves before handling. Slowly remove all packing material and inspect the frame before hanging.

Pro Tip

Always handle your print with both hands, holding it by opposite corners very gently. This distributes pressure evenly and prevents creasing or warping.

Handling Your Print

Never touch the printed surface

Oils and moisture from your skin cause smudging and long-term discolouration. Always handle from the edges, the back, or with clean gloves — especially for unframed prints.

Store flat or rolled — never folded

If storing a rolled print, keep it in its original tube in a cool, dry place. Never fold or crease a print — paper memory is permanent and fold marks cannot be fully removed.

Clean gently — never wet

For framed prints, lightly dust the glass with a dry lint-free cloth. Never spray water or cleaning products directly onto the print or frame. For unframed prints, do not attempt to clean the printed surface.

Where your art lives

Environment & Placement

The environment around your print has a significant impact on its longevity. Four factors to keep in mind:

Light

Keep art away from direct sunlight, particularly south-facing light. Prolonged UV exposure causes yellowing and fading. Less critical for laminated or framed prints, but still worth avoiding.

Humidity

Maintain relative humidity between 35–55%. Too high and mould can damage the paper. Too low and it becomes brittle. Avoid steamy bathrooms or kitchens for unframed prints.

Temperature

Keep prints in a cool, stable environment. Avoid hanging near radiators, air-conditioners, or any source of extreme heat or cold. Fluctuating temperatures accelerate deterioration.

Pollution & Dust

Keep art away from dust, smoke and airborne pollutants. Light surface dust on a framed print can be carefully brushed away with a clean, dry soft cloth — always in one direction.

Putting it up

Hanging & Display

A well-hung print makes all the difference. Here are a few things to keep in mind before you put that nail in the wall.

Wall Type

For plaster or drywall, use a picture hook rated for at least double the frame weight. For concrete or brick walls, use a masonry nail or drill a plug. Never rely on adhesive strips alone for larger frames — they can fail over time especially in humidity.

Height & Levelling

The golden rule — hang art so the centre of the piece is at eye level, roughly 145–150cm from the floor. Use a spirit level or the level on your phone to ensure it sits straight. Small adjustments make a huge visual difference.

Gallery Wall Spacing

For gallery walls, aim for 5–8cm of space between each frame. Lay everything out on the floor first before committing to the wall. Start from the centre piece and work outward for the most balanced result.

Canvas & Gallery Wrap Care

Canvas wraps behave differently from paper prints and need slightly different care. Here's what to know:

Dusting Canvas

Use a clean, dry soft-bristle brush or a lint roller to gently remove surface dust. Never use a damp cloth directly on canvas — moisture can cause the ink to bleed or the canvas to warp. Work from top to bottom in light, sweeping strokes.

Moisture & Canvas

Canvas is more susceptible to humidity than framed prints. If the canvas starts to sag slightly over time, a light misting of water on the back (not the front) and allowing it to dry taut can help. Do not expose the printed side to moisture.

Sunlight on Canvas

Canvas prints are more vulnerable to UV fading than framed prints behind glass. Keep them out of direct sunlight wherever possible, or consider a UV-protective spray available at most art supply stores for long-term preservation.

Handling Canvas

Always carry a canvas wrap by holding the frame on the sides — never by the printed surface or the top edge. The stretcher bars are the strongest part of the piece. Avoid pressing fingers into the canvas face as dents can be difficult to reverse.
